Flowers in Your Home
There is just something about flowers…They bring a smile to your face. They can add a bit of cheerfulness to an otherwise ordinary day.
I grow lots of flowers and I have always enjoyed bouquets into the house. I especially like to bring bouquets of fragrant herbs inside. They not only entice with their beauty, but also fill the rooms with their sweet fragrance.
Until recently, I would just cut a bouquet occasionally. I did not make a conscious effort to include flowers all the time in my home. That is until last year when a friend of mine told me that she spends five bucks on herself every week. No, not on a grande latte and a muffin — She buys herself a five dollar bouquet of flowers every week at the local farmer’s market. It is her way of treating herself without feeling over indulgent. Unlike a latte, she enjoys that five dollar investment for a full 7-10 days (sometimes longer) before needing to replace it.
When she told me about this weekly ritual, I was immediately intrigued and decided to do the same. Most weeks, I pick my own bouquets from my herb/flower garden. But many times I buy some seasonal flowers at the farmer’s market. They have many flowers that I do not have. (My favorite time was Lilac season!) It makes it extra special and decadent to buy something unusual or even exotic. At first, I felt a pang of guilt at buying something when I have a yard full of colorful flowers. But it was only five dollars, after all, and I was surprised at how special it made me feel. It has become my weekly ritual as well.
Sometimes, I do a fancy arrangement. Other times, I tuck the freestyle bouquet into a simple vase or watering can. But no matter how I do it, I try to always have flowers somewhere in my home at all times. It is a special treat for me (that everyone else enjoys as well) and reminds me to stop and enjoy nature — if only for a moment.
We lead such busy lives. We sometimes need that reminder that quiet moments are extremely important. That brief moment that you notice the flowers, smell them and touch them forces you to stop…think and smile. That is just the ticket to help us through the days of endless “to-do” lists and busy schedules. We need to smile more. A bouquet of fresh flowers can help you achieve that goal.
